The Best of Sherlock Holmes |
The Complete BSM has no significant problems or bugs. As with all computer products, it does have a few minor limitations. None of these should prevent you from buying the current product. I've listed workarounds that may be helpful. Please contact me if you find other errata or limitations, so we can inform others who use the Complete BSM.
Cannot select the article title or author at the beginning of an article
Due to an optical character recognition (OCR) problem, the article title and author at the beginning of an article was usually not converted into selectable text. You can read it on screen but cannot copy/paste that underlying text. It's probably simplest to just type that information yourself, and then copy/paste the text of the article itself.
Cannot find a title or author listed in the Author/Title index
The Complete BSM comes with two separate Author/Title index files. The first one covers issues #1-50 (1975 – Summer 1987) while the second file covers #51-60 (Winter 1987 – Winter 1989). Within each file, there are separate author and title sections. Be sure that you are looking in the correct section, and that you have checked both files. Note that there is no Author/Title index for issues #61-76.
However, I've found it to be faster to use the Adobe Reader search function and search across all the files. This will also check the Author/Title index files. You will usually get a match if you search for a short portion of the title or author name. See the Tips for Using the BSM page for how to do that most efficiently.
Text is not found or Search does not find all keywords
While most of the Complete BSM text is quite accurate, there are some scanning and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) text errors. To minimize the impact of OCR errors, search for as few letters as possible and use wildcards. Remember that the Search function looks for complete words unless you use wildcards. See my Tips for Using the BSM .
Text not readable on-screen / missing pages
I have not noticed any missing pages or any significant illegible text. If you find any missing pages, please contact me so I can add the information to this page.
